Hi 👋

My name is Ruben. I co-built Makers.tech, the first-to-open coding bootcamp in Europe, back in February 2013. At Makers I built and ran the sales team for many, many years. During that time we placed almost 2,000-3,000 engineers into jobs.

One issue I found when I hired my sales team was that the sales team didn't know much about tech nor did the in-house recruiters. Imagine the situation when both speak to each other about something they don't get. It goes something like:

Makers' sales person: Hi, we train great junior engineers In-house recruiter: OK, what tech do you cover Makers' sales person: course is in Ruby, but really undefined variable interrupted In-house recruiter: sorry, we have only Java Makers' sales person: yes, but our learners can get java too In-house recruiter: right, but you said they do Ruby

And no-one here is to be blamed. One is trying to sell. The other is trying to minimise the wasted time by hiring managers on candidates that aren't right for them.

This is where learning about tech, on both sides of the coin, is valuable. Knowing your ABC in your specific fields will never hurt. TechMap was designed exactly to solve this particular problem.

Here's how the same conversation happens today:

Makers' sales person: Hi, we train junior engineers who are language agnostic In-house recruiter: aha, interesting. What's your philosophy to software development? And are they mostly focused on functional or OOP? Makers' sales person: We follow a sort-of XP programming approach, with TDD from day 1. And we mostly focus on OOD/OOP. This being said, we have some alumnus who completed the course and went into Kotlin, Scala and the likes.

See how much more powerful this conversation goes?

Here's what Lauralei, Account Director at Makers had to say about TechMap

I’ve been following the TechMap programme for a few months now and have found it invaluable to my role. You have the freedom to choose the modules most relevant to your role, accessing a combination of simple videos and articles, which break down each topic in a straightforward, easy-to-digest way. The simple analogies have really helped me grasp complex tech concepts. The TechMap team provides check-in sessions throughout the course, giving you the chance to cement your learning with interactive discussions. I now feel so much more confident when leading discussions with technical stakeholders across enterprise tech companies.

Knowledge is power 💪🧠
